You’ll be seeing some activity this summer at KEA’s property on Mill Bay Road! The Board of Directors took unanimous action at a special meeting on May 5 to award Jay-Brant, General Contractors LLC, with the contract for the New Headquarters building. The new building will be located adjacent to KEA’s operations, garages, and warehouse, and will provide a “campus” atmosphere to bring all KEA’s employees together in one area for increased staffing efficiencies in a more convenient location, to better serve our members.
At KEA’s Annual Membership Meeting on April 22, 2013, President/CEO Darron Scott formally announced that preliminary work with an architect was underway. During the past year, the KEA Board of Directors and management has worked closely with the architectural firm of ECI-Hyer to carefully explore, study, and evaluate each step of the process. Major milestones included completing a Geo-tech survey of the site, as well as an environmental site contamination check, replatting the site, and a topographic survey of the site. The Board approved design developments at three phases: 35% design work in September, 65% design work in December, and 95% design work in March. The project was next put out to bid with contracting firms, and then awarded this month.
“KEA’s been looking at this concept for a long time,” said President/CEO Darron Scott. “The authorized building budget was $10 million, and the plan at this time is to be under that amount. Throughout our process, we have carefully examined the cost and embedded it into our financial forecast, which shows that the new building will not cause a rate increase for our members.”
Look around Kodiak, and you’ll see the beautiful design work of ECI-Hyer on the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Building on Near Island, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge Visitor’s Center, Kodiak Community Swimming Pool, and Kodiak Area Native Association – Koniag Regional Office Building.
KEA’s new building will be approximately 15,000 gross square feet divided in two stories, with access for our members on Mill Bay Road. A construction schedule of approximately 57 weeks is planned with completion next summer.
